The road was slick with rain, neon smearing across the windshield as the bass crept up through the tires and into my chest. Somewhere between the empty highway and the next pulse of light, the city fell away and the night opened into concrete, fog, and strobes. By the time the drop hit, every shadow in the tunnel was moving like it had been waiting for that moment all along.
